Finding Your Niche in the Vast Cyber Frontier
Everyone talks about “finding a niche”, but exactly what is a niche and why is it so important to do this?
Just like home decor, a niche is a grouping of similar items (or interests) that relate to each other and share a common theme. And if you want your online business to succeed, you need to focus on a very small, segmented and TARGETED audience — not the whole cyber universe!
By focusing on a core group of consumers with a shared interest, you’ll be able to tailor your message and the products you offer to them to their specific wants and needs.
Know Who Your Target Audience Really Is
This may seem like a given to you, and you just assume you know who you’ll be marketing to. But as you start your own online business, do you really know who your audience is?
A large medical or pharmaceutical company might assume its target audience is doctors or hospital administrators. But reality may be far different, because moms looking to help their sick kids are seeking information too, and are as likely (if not more so) to visit the site seeking information.
So never assume that you know who your audience is. Pay attention – to their comments, their e-mails, their concerns. Look for trends or unanswered questions, and become their go-to site for information to help them.
Pick a Business Model: Product Selection or Creation
Next you’ll need to decide what you are going to sell or promote. You have options of opening your own online store, creating your own information products, or utilizing affiliate marketing to promote other people’s products.
If you opt for creating your own products, focus on the needs of your audience and what pressing problems they might have. If you’re niche is puppy training for small breeds, perhaps a special report on housebreaking or how to stop your puppy from chewing would be a great match for their interests.
And don’t think that just because you feel you’re not a good writer that you can’t create information products. Many successful marketers outsource their product creation to professional freelance writers, then package the material and market it as their own.
